Andhra Pradesh’s maritime sector is set for a major expansion with Navratna Defence PSU Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) planning a modern greenfield shipyard at Dugarajapatnam.
MDL has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with National Shipbuilding and Heavy Industries Park-AP (NSHIP-AP) for the project. The company envisages investing approximately ₹15,000 crore over the next five to seven years, subject to necessary approvals and clearances. The project is expected to generate around 45,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities.
The proposed shipyard is planned with a design capacity of around 1.2 million gross tonnage per year, with scope for future expansion. It is expected to build commercial vessels including tankers, bulk carriers, container ships and LNG carriers.
The wider Dugarajapatnam cluster is also expected to support industries such as ship repair, marine engineering, manufacturing, logistics and other maritime-related activities. MDL is envisaged as the anchor shipyard for this developing ecosystem.
The Andhra Pradesh government says the project forms part of its effort to use the state’s coastline and industrial infrastructure to expand its role in India’s shipbuilding sector.
